i read that Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) was actually in the Navy in the early 1950's and refused to go to Korea, He was thrown out of the Navy and his record was permanantly damaged.
In the end, I guess he did OK for himself.

i could find no evidence to support this but i did find that he was made an honorary marine and has held the position as corporal
